Bio-writing service: Grammy Award-winning producer My Guy Mars

October 5, 2017

Hailing from Los Angeles, Calif., My Guy Mars (Lamar Edwards) is a multi-time Grammy nominee and award winner multifaceted recording artist, best known for his production, songwriting and for his work as a solo musician.

Born to musical parents, with his mother (Tracie Edwards) a singer and his father (Clifton Edwards Jr.) a minister, songwriter and artist, My Guy Mars grew up with the sounds of gospel, soul and R&B happily filling his family's household, inspiring him to explore his own talents from a young age, even playing organ each week in his grandfather's church.

From learning the piano at the age of four with the expert guidance of his father to teaching himself how to play drums, guitar, bass and percussion, My Guy Mars' knowledge and understanding of music paved a necessary foundation for him to study a wide range of genres and perfect his craft, leading up to his being introduced to hip-hop and rap as a high school student. Enamored by the artistry of J. Dilla, My Guy Mars joined his first band, 1500 or Nothin' at age 17, during which he began solidifying himself as an artist with a dedicated emphasis on top-tier musicianship, polished execution and vibrant creativity, integral qualities that became definitive of his career today.

With his band-turned-collective leading him to an array of life-changing opportunities since their formation in 2006, such as utilizing Snoop Dogg's studio due to attending the Musician Institute and catching the attention of Bobby Valentino as a result, My Guy Mars soon found himself working for the likes of hip-hop veterans such as Snoop and T.I. From working on the theme music for T.I.'s VH1 show, Family Hustle, to recording his own solo material, My Guy Mars has established himself as one of music's most trustworthy and go-to collaborators, often praised for his professionalism and humble nature.

He has since gone on to lend his production and songwriting expertise to the likes of a star-studded client list, including his mentors, T.I. and Snoop Dog, as well as some of contemporary music's most talented and celebrated acts, including R. Kelly, Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown, Drake, Faith Evans, Bow Wow, Busta Rhymes, Bobby Valentino, The Game, Jay-Z, Lupe Fiasco, Master P, Jennifer Hudson, Marsha Ambrosius, Mya, Nelly, Nipsey Hussle, Wiz Khalifa, YG, 2 Chainz, Ty Dolla Sign, Mac Miller and more.

With a consistent hunger to continuously evolve his craft and share his wealth of musical knowledge with other like-minded creatives, My Guy Mars began his own record label, Astronaught Gang, as well as began hosting his celebrated radio show, which currently airs weekly on DASH Radio.

With a vast array of music credits under his belt, as well as several hard-earned plaques adorning his studio walls, his collection of solo material currently includes two projects hosted by DJ Don Cannon, Life on Mars (2010) and My Guy Mars (2013), an instrumental tape, 2012's The Best on Earth and his latest solo mixtape, No Days Off (2016). While he continues to develop his sound and work alongside 1500 or Nothin', My Guy Mars can be found living each day with gratitude, whether he is lending his talents on stage or on the road alike.

#Repost Revolt.TV: A guide to 10 of the best eats in Miami for Revolt Music Conference 2017

September 25, 2017

Originally published here via REVOLT.

When people think of Miami, it's difficult not to do so fondly.

With the city full of vibrant nightlife, ever-popular beaches and its iconic collection of Art Deco architecture, the Florida metropolis has long been established as a go-to destination for those looking to find a second home in its characteristically never-ending summer oasis.

Naturally, an integral part of the city is its food culture. Renowned for its Cuban and Latin American-influenced cuisine, a visit to Miami would not be complete without hitting up a vast array of some of the city's most celebrated, innovative and up-and-coming staples. In fact, one could argue that an entire vacation could be worth taking just to experience the multifaceted and multicultural cuisine Miami has to offer.

From kicking off the day with a trendy-but-nutritious Acai bowl to refueling after a day spent soaking up the sun with the best Cuban sandwich you'll ever eat, REVOLT has got all your bases covered. With this year's REVOLT Music Conferencecreeping up, taking place October 12-15, we've compiled a handy guide featuring ten must-visit spots in Miami. Food enthusiasts, take heed.

Coyo Taco

Address: 2300 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33127 and 1111 SW 1st Ave Miami, FL 33130

Website/Menu: http://coyo-taco.com/wynwood/

Why it's a must-visit: Located in the heart of Wynwood, Coya Taco is a laid-back taqueria that has a wide-ranging menu, with taco-fillings including items such as grilled cactus, charred octopus, slow-roasted pork shoulder, locally sourced vegetables and more, with each taco being built utilizing tortillas authentically pressed by hand. The kitchen, which is helmed by executive chef Scott Linquist, prepares each taco with care and in plain view, from behind a wide-set exhibition kitchen. As far as drinks go, the "paleta-rita" is a local staple with spiked Aguas frescas also a nice option. Coya also often features live music with a handful of reoccurring DJ nights, including Rum & Bass and Dubwise Miami. The line often stretches out the door, especially on weekends, but that's further proof that this destination is worth checking out.

Jugofresh

Address: Several locations

Website/Menu: http://jugofresh.com/

Why it's a must-visit: Miami is a city that plays hard and works hard. For the days when an extra nutritional boost is needed, Jugofresh has your back. The business, which has several locations scattered throughout Miami, places an emphasis on health-conscious items, ranging from wellness shots to cold-press juices to vegan/gluten-free snacks, and of course, the ever-popular Acai bowl. If you choose to indulge in the feel-good freshness Jugofresh provides, your future self will thank you.

Panther Coffee

Address: 2390 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33127 + other locations

Website/Menu: https://squareup.com/store/panther-coffee-3

Why it's a must-visit: This is definitely one of those hipster coffee places, but one that is less overwhelming for people who don't consider themselves as coffee snobs. Its ambiance is on point, with plenty of outdoor seating and a soothing atheistic on the inside. The Miami-based specialty coffee roaster has come a long way since its humble beginnings, first getting its start as a cart on a bicycle serving cold brew at various food truck gatherings. The Wynwood location is a perfect place to get your caffeine fix or take a break from wandering the street-art laden neighborhood.

Dizengoff

Address: 250 NW 24th St, Miami, FL 33127

Website/Menu: http://www.dizengoffhummus.com/

Why it's a must-visit: Dizengoff, named after one of Tel Aviv's most iconic streets, first established itself in Philadelphia, and now has locations in Miami and New York City. This is where you will find the absolute best hummus in town, with the Wynwood location right next door to Federal Donuts (in case you want to eat healthy and then treat yourself). The reputed hummus is made fresh daily and is topped with a rotation of garnishes, including chickpeas, tehinas, lamb merquez and cabbage, as well as is served with a hearth-baked pita, chopped Israeli salad and pickles. While the Miami location opened this summer, it's already becoming a local favorite.

GLAM Vegan

Address: 3301 NE 1st Ave Suite 103-1, Miami, FL 33137

Website/Menu: https://www.glam-vegan.com/

Why it's a must-visit:

GLAM, which is short for Green Living Animals Matter, has an extensive menu that is sure to please those who prefer vegan options. The establishment is relatively brand new but is already solidifying itself as the best vegan restaurant in town. With an extensive menu full of creative meatless options, created by Todd Erickson, those hesitant to eat clean will be pleasantly surprised. Especially considering the restaurant has been dubbed as bringing "fast-casual vegan dining" to Midtown Miami, those looking to eat quickly (and therefore get back to what RMC has to offer) won't have to sacrifice quality.

Enriqueta's

Address: 186 NE 29th St, Miami, FL 33137

Website/Menu: http://southflorida.menupages.com/restaurants/enriquetas-sandwich-shop/

Why it's a must-visit: While Miami is scattered with top-tier sandwich shops, there's something special about Enriqueta. The sandwich shop, which is open for breakfast and lunch only, is renowned for its Cuban fare. Don't be turned off by its simple decor, the focus here is on the food, which also just so happens to be reasonably priced in addition to being delicious. Win-win.

Versaille's

Address: 3501 SW 8th St, Miami, FL 33135

Website/Menu: http://www.versaillesrestaurant.com/

Why it's a must-visit:

Versaille's is essentially the quintessential go-to for Cuban cuisine and is exactly the type of restaurant that people think of when they think of Miami. Versaille's, which was founded in 1971, hails itself as the "World's Most Famous Cuban Restaurant," and it's hard to make a rebuttal proving otherwise. Lucky, its delicious food matches its reputation as a Miami landmark, with the Little Havana eatery doubling as the ideal gathering place and self-described "unofficial town square" for locals and tourists to enjoy.

Las Olas Café

Address: 644 6th St, Miami Beach, FL 33139

Website/Menu: http://lasolascafesb.com/

Why it's a must-visit: Yet another laid-back eatery featuring the ever-popular Cuban sandwich. But, hey, when in Miami, you may as well work to try them all! Las Olas Café also serves all-day breakfast, with many gravitating towards it divey vibe and fast service. The restaurant, which comes recommended by the likes of Anthony Bourdain, often has a crowd gathered in the morning hours. Also, take note and come prepared - this South Beach staple is cash-only, further adding to its old school charm.

El Palacio De Los Jugos

Address: Several locations

Website/Menu: http://www.elpalaciodelosjugos.com/en/

Why it's a must-visit:

This local eatery, whose name translates to "The Juice Palace," is an open-air restaurant featuring three different components: a juice bar, a sandwich counter and a hot-food area that dishes out incredible Cuban food, either by meal or by the pound. Prices also skew on the lower end of the spectrum, making it a one-stop spot depending on your cravings. They even serve various seafood dishes, with many favoring the lobster. Its family atmosphere adds to its allure, with the staff preparing its food "with the best ingredients and with love."

Pinolandia

Address: 119 NW 12th Ave, Miami, FL 33128

Website/Menu: http://places.singleplatform.com/tortillas-y-productos-nica-pinolandia/menu?ref=google

Why it's a must-visit:

This Nicaraguan spot is open 24-hours, making it a perfect destination for the late night crowd. Despite its frequent crowds, Pinolandia is what many consider a hidden gem, with the food making up for the possible wait. Guests certainly get their money's worth, with the portions extremely generous. If you want to get a taste of the local flavor and dust off your Spanish, plus get an incredible bang for your buck, this place is for you.

Bonus:

Yardbird

Address: 1600 Lenox Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139

Website/menu: http://www.runchickenrun.com/location/miami/#menus/

This is a must for those looking for classic Southern cooking while visiting South Beach, with the restaurant also having locations in Las Vegas and Singapore. The atmosphere is as enjoyable as the food, with the rustic eatery putting its own subtle twist on traditional Southern comfort food dishes, such as grits, chicken and waffles, smoked ribs, cornbread and fried green tomatoes.

#Repost SomeGirlsGetHigh: #WeedCrushWednesday: Joy Victoria Clarke of Mahogany Mary Event Group

September 20, 2017

Originally published on Some Girls Get High.

Earlier this summer, Some Girls Get High founder, Margaret and myself had the opportunity to attend an educational panel hosted by our friends at the 420 Attorneys in Beverly Hills, with the afternoon’s discussions centered on cannabis and the ever-confusing and ever-changing legality of our favorite plant. I couldn’t help but think about how dope it was that I was able to sit alongside a room full of aspiring (and established) entrepreneurs, especially those who are eager to learn as much about the cannabis industry in order to master it from all angles like we are. Among those inspiring like-minds we met was the lovely Joy Victoria Clarke, who is the mastermind behind Mahogany Mary Event Group.

As much as we all love going to parties and events, most of us can agree any occasion is just thaaat much more enjoyable when you’re celebrating alongside people who like to get down the same way that you do. Joy’s company provides bespoke cannabis event curation services as well as is a platform for what she describes as the woke-stoner. AKA - she’s exactly the type of boss lady we not only want to chill with, but also is someone one we can find inspiration from, learn from and aim to grow with.

Whether Joy is building her brand Mahogany Mary, collaborating with the who’s who of fast-rising marijuana companies, coordinating meet-ups, meditations and yoga workouts, or simply updating her blog, “Puff. Pass. Love,” she can be found doing so with an intention of spreading pure peace and we are so happy to support her in her endeavors.

As we are all on our journey to our highest self, we are so grateful that Joy took the time to chat with us to tell us more about the vision behind her company, how she got started in the cannabis industry and what she hopes to achieve next. Check out our Q+A below!

Name: Joy Victoria Clarke

Location: West Hollywood, California

Occupation: Founder | Curator of Mahogany Mary Event Group, LLC

How long have you been doing what you do? I have worked in the event marketing space for over 7 years as an Account Manager for many household brands such as Toyota, Target and E&J Gallo. It was the beginning of this year [2017] that I launched my very own event marketing agency specializing in the curation of cannabis events.

What is one thing that always comes up when you are describing your life and your work? When I describe my life and work my true passion for human connection, interaction and collaboration always comes up. I genuinely enjoy cultivating spaces for strangers to have a good time together. Cannabis is always the catalyst of some of the most enjoyable and interesting moments in life.

Is there an early memory you’d like to share about when you first discovered some of your passions? In the cannabis space or otherwise? In 2012, I had the opportunity to lead a major activation for E&J Gallo’s Apothic Wine brand. I was only a junior level employee and my manager let me take ownership of the project. I worked my ass off and when the event concluded and patrons were happy and clients were satisfied, I knew I found my gift.

What is your morning routine like? Can you walk us through briefly what a normal day in the life looks like for you? My morning routine consists of 1. Prayer as soon as I open my eyes. 2. Wake n’ Bake yoga session 3. Breakfast 4. Building Mahogany Mary.  Because I am still working full-time for a prominent media agency, I like to give myself my best fresh mind before going into a corporate office for 8+ hours of the day so I am up at 5:30a/6a daily, even on weekends. Anytime I am not at the office, I am networking and developing pieces of my business. My goal is to be a marijuana mogul and full-time entrepreneur sooner, rather than later.

Where do you find inspiration or when do you feel the most inspired? I feel the most inspired by music, fashion and black culture. I smoke weed and listen to my favorite artist SZA, Rihanna, Childish Gambino and Jhené Aiko. It helps me think creatively and freely. I try to curate events cool enough that those artists would want to attend!

In our ongoing attempts to bring out inner peace in others, we’d like to ask you a question that we typically word like this: If you had a magic wand, what would you use it for? What would you want to have happen? If I had a magic wand I would let all non-violent marijuana drug offenders out of prison and provide resources for them to rebuild their lives and benefit from the new legal market.

What can we look forward to next with your business/art/etc? You can look forward to a memorable Mahogany Mary event experience whether you are a cannabis novice or connoisseur. Follow us at @mahogany.maryInstagram for upcoming events.

What are some words of wisdom or an important mantra that you live by? Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want or to ask for what you’re worth.
