Year in Review: My Favorite Writing Moments of 2016

I could talk for days about how 2016 changed and elevated my career, with gratitude, but instead I'll save those conversations for another time. For this personal blog post, I chose to simply pick out some pieces that stood out in my portfolio. I chose not to include event recaps, album reviews, my On The Rise interview series focusing on rising artists for TheSource, any news writing nor any of my print clips. For those, you'll have to visit me here.

Artist Services: Biography for G4SHi

December 19, 2016

Longer form bio for artist G4SHi:
Last Of A Rare Breed: Introducing G4SHi

From a refugee to a revolutionary, G4SHi embraces his role of being a tastemaker with a genuine confidence, for being a determined individual with a vision is the only direction he has ever truly known.

Born in Africa to Albanian parents, G4SHi’s family had left a war-torn Kosovo with eyes on a better quality of life. Their travels took them around the world all before G4SHi hit double digits, with the young musician-in-the-making and his brother performing on the street to help feed his family and doing whatever they could, by any means possible, to make it through another day.

On an uncharted path led by way of blind faith and persistence, overcoming daily challenges brought G4SHi and his family to Brooklyn. Once in New York, he taught himself English by writing rhymes seeking redemption after neighborhood kids teased him for being different and not knowing the native language. He later excelled in school, going on to earn a full football scholarship in college before making the less-than-supported decision to leave everything behind to pursue his creative dreams full-time with a newfound commitment and passion.

Coming from nothing as a first-generation American, the 26-year-old has had no choice but to exemplify a fighting spirit his entire life, creating his own opportunities within music and visual art out of necessity to survive and in order to move forward. G4SHi hones his multidimensional talents to express himself with a larger picture in mind, and as a result, his continuing journey is inspiring by nature, both as an artist with an innovative mind and as a human being.

Whether he is singing, rapping, producing music or directing music videos, his strength as an artist lies directly in his unapologetic sense of self and his natural ability to resonate emotionally with others. What he’s been through, listeners can feel and experience through his music, with his conceptual videos building another dimension helping to connect others to his message.

With his mother’s wisdom and his father’s wit, G4SHi consistently channels the ways he was inspired by the music that raised him, such as Michael Jackson and his brother’s trustworthy taste in 90s hip-hop. His musical background is deeply rooted in his family, and in turn, his goals in the current day are driven by a responsibility he takes seriously: to do both his family, and his country, proud.

His creative process has evolved with his age and his experiences alike, going through several necessary transitions, sculpting his sound into what it is in its current form. While G4SHi’s past work has fallen under the hip-hop category, gaining the attention of established artists such as Don Cannon and collaborating with the likes of French Montana and Nipsey Hussle early on in his career, to write off him as ‘just a rapper’ is to do him an injustice that is also deeply inaccurate.

G4SHi has found a style musically that distinctively fits him, all while refusing to allow what other musicians are doing to distract him, sway him or take away from the substance he has engrained into his music, as inspired by his story. His seasoned ability to decide what is and isn’t for him, in regards to what he’s creating, helps his music to hold its authenticity, while also not limiting him to one lane. Additionally, G4SHi is extremely hands-on and attentive to detail throughout the entire process, directing and guiding those that work with him to elevate his talents and help execute a product of strong quality.

As the number four followed him everywhere from menu specials at restaurants to floors of buildings for meetings and so on, he decided to include it stylistically in his name. Throwing up four fingers became a symbol of still being in the game against all odds, something that his audience has adapted as a mantra, connecting them to G4SHi as he relentlessly leads by example, fighting his battles and inspiring others to do the same.

G4SHi’s larger-than-life stage presence adds another exuberant complexity to him as an artist, taking to the stage as if he is fulfilling his destiny each and every time he holds a microphone, engaging a crowd that is instantly infatuated and enamored by his energy. His influence and his fanbase grows as he grows, allowing G4SHi to carefully and tactfully put his time in to make the music he wants to make, all while pushing boundaries that he sincerely can stand behind. G4SHi wants his fans to feel music the same way that he does and his music can only be classified appropriately as forward-thinking mood music. His music is heartfelt, his lessons have been learned the hard way, and his legacy is in the making.

G4SHi lives by a mantra that he wants to make the rest of his life the best of his life, all while remaining humble and hardworking. As he continues to garner the attention he deserves, he’s grateful for those walking alongside him, with four’s up.

Shorter form bio for G4SHi:

Brooklyn-based musician G4SHi embraces being a natural-born tastemaker by creating forward-thinking mood music laced with the genuine intention of inspiring others through his story and perspective as a first-generation Albanian American.

Whether G4SHi is singing, rapping, producing or directing music videos, all in a distinctive style entirely his own, his strengths as an artist lie in his unapologetic sense of self and his God-given ability to resonate emotionally with others.

As G4SHi carries out his destiny to craft his best work possible, his consistent execution of his creative vision continues to elevate him from refugee to revolutionary with each passing day.

ABOUT STAIRS EP, A project released in July 2016:

G4SHi’s latest offering, a 7-track EP entitled Stairs, is a sophisticated reintroduction to the extraordinary artist he continuously is evolving into.

With each track harnessing innovative sounds that differ from the hip-hop leaning material he’s previously released, Stairs encompasses G4SHi’s distinctive rhyme-singing over multidimensional, tactful production. The project showcases the electrifying and emotional foundation G4SHi’s curious world is built from, all while covering impressive new ground with each song and remaining true to who he is as a musician with vision.

When G4SHi attests, “Everything you need to know about me, you can learn from my music,” he truly means it. From the project’s first track, “Avni,” all the way through to its closer, “Dubai” G4SHi familiarizes listeners to several different layers of his complex individuality, as woven together through passionate, autobiographical lyrics.

On Stairs, G4SHi successfully balances the allure of mystery with a refreshing honesty; with his strengths lying in his ability to curate the direction he envisions his art moving forward, as others inevitably try to catch up to him.

Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik - "I Don't Wanna Live Forever"

As 2016 creeps closer to an end, Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik are reminding us that this year isn't over quite yet, with plenty of incredible music still to come. The unlikely duo's new collaboration, "I Don't Want To Live Forever" tops this week's #SpotifyNMF, with the pair joining forces to bless the forthcoming Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack. With both powerhouse vocalists trading verses, the song takes a turn for the dramatic and passionate, painting an emotional story of a less-than-picture-perfect romance. The track came together through several twists of fate, with Malik's girlfriend, model Gigi Hadid, helping to connect the dots thanks to her friendship with the superstar singer. Penned by Jack Antonoff, the picturesque ballad comes to life over soft production, making for a solid and sound duet that beautifully weaves together Zayn's impressively wide vocal range with Swift's piercingly sweet and signature voice.

Coldplay - "Everglow" - Live from Spotify London

Coldplay recently made magic at Spotify London, crafting a deliciously unique collection of stripped-back live recordings capable of winning over new fans and reminding day one supporters exactly why the British rock group has been at the top of the game for the past two decades. For the special Spotify session, the alternative rock quartet expertly revisits the depths of their extensive catalog, performing celebrated tracks such as "Viva La Vida," "Yellow" and "Adventures of a Lifetime." As exemplified on their live take of "Everglow," throughout the five track collection, Coldplay breathes new life into each, highlighting their talents as veteran musicians who have long honed their gift for both captivating and connecting with a diverse audience.

Kid Cudi - "Swim In The Light"

Today, we find ourselves discovering a new hero in Kid Cudi. Through 86 minutes of original music, in the form of his highly anticipated sixth studio album, Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin', the Grammy Award-winning recording artist evolves right in front of our eyes, taking us through the depths of his genius with an intimacy and boldness we can't help but feel grateful for. The album arrives following his publicly addressing his private battle with depression and suicidal urges, with the Cleveland native voluntarily checking himself into a rehab facility earlier this fall. As exemplified through his new 18-track collection, this project's lyrical content is immensely personal, honest and unfiltered. Through stylistic, auto-tuned vocals, Kid Cudi takes us on an emotionally raw journey accented by dark, looming production, intentionally divvied up into four acts, with each tackling various themes with artistic and passionate intention. On "Swim In The Light," Kid Cudi pours his soul out, diving deep into waters that navigate the importance of finding light, even in the darkest of times. Through Kid Cudi's heartfelt expression, we are reminded once again that music truly is therapy.

Yo Gotti - "Castro" featuring Kanye West, Big Sean, Quavo, 2 Chainz

Yo Gotti is ringing in the New Year with the best kind of swag: a shiny new record deal. Pairing the exciting announcement he's signed with Roc Nation with a new track, the rapper makes a strong re-introduction with a star-studded assist featuring Kanye West, Big Sean, Quavo and 2 Chainz. Such a posse cut is as rare as it is epic, solidifying the 35-year-old emcee's place as a force to be reckoned with. With over fifteen years in the game, Yo Gotti is ready to take what's his and soak up the spotlight he deserves, apologizing for nothing along the way. On "Castro," each rap heavyweight joins forces for the second time in their careers, flexing in a unique fashion by way of comparing themselves to the late Fidel Castro.

Muscadine Bloodline - "WD-40"

Muscadine Bloodline is continuing to make their incredible talents known, with the release of their new single "WD-40" unapologetically upping the ante the Alabama duo has got next. This week, members Gary Stanton and Charlie Muncaster celebrated their first year milestone creating and performing music together as Muscadine Bloodline. The multitude of success the group has achieved following their relocation to Nashville and in such a short time span is undeniably impressive, helping to build anticipation for their first official project. Despite only having three singles recorded, the duo found themselves capturing the attention and interest of critically acclaimed songwriter, Luke Laird, who was quick to reach out to the group regarding the life-changing possibility of working together. "I was driving to my studio at Creative Nation one morning when I first heard Muscadine Bloodline on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist," Laird recalls. "I was immediately captivated by their songs and artistry and messaged them. We totally hit it off and the next thing you know, we were in the studio recording 'WD-40' and their upcoming EP." While the rest was history, technically, Muscadine Bloodline's future is looking bright as ever, with the trailblazing country scene theirs for the taking in 2017.
